GENERAL V.K. SINGH, PVSM, AVSM, YSM, ADC,COAS

CHIEF OF THE ARMY STAFF

     General V K Singh, PVSM, AVSM, YSM, ADC , a third generation Rajput officer is an alumnus of Birla Public School, Pilani. He was commissioned in 2 Rajput (Kali Chindi) and commanded the same with distinction for three years. He took as COAS on 01 April 2010, which is a proud movement for the entire BPS family and its alumni.

     He joined Birla Public School, Pilani in 1957 in class 1.  His Roll No. was 394.  He went to NDA after completing his 10^th class and had figured in the merit list of Rajasthan Board of Education.  At NDA he passed out with honours as a Battalion Cadet Captain and at IMA he was awarded the Gold Medal and passed out as a senior most Infantry cadet.  He was also awarded the Commando Dagger in the Young Officers Course.

     His chequered career spanning 40 years has seen him command troops in active operations in Counter Insurgency, Line of Control, High Altitude and other Aggressive Theaters.  His daredevil close encounters with the enemy saw him in action in the liberation war of Bangladesh and Op Pawan in Sri Lanka where he was awarded the Yudh Sewa Medal.

     He has had an illustrious career with an outstanding performance in all courses.  A graduate of the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington with a competitive vacancy, he has excelled in the course at Fort Benning, USA and passed out with an “Exceptional Grading at the US Army War College, Carlisle.

     The General, a charismatic self, shoulders a wide range of experience at various high profile Command, Staff and Instructional Appointments.  He commanded his unit in an active line of Control Environment and Brigade in an operationally sensitive area.  While in command of a counter insurgency force, he was awarded the prestigious Ati Vishist Seva Medal (AVSM) for his distinguished services as G.O.C.  He was awarded COAS commendation card during his tenure in Military Operations Directorate, for his work in Siachin.  He has also served a Foreign Tenure as instructor at HQ IMTRAT In Bhutan. While serving as Eastern ArmyCommander, he was decorated with the prestigious “Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM) and ADC. The General is happily married to Mrs. Bharti Singh and they have two daughters.  The elder daughter is married to an Army Officer and the younger one has done her MBA.
